The Franklin and Grand Isle Counties Farmers Watershed Alliance (FWA) is seeking a qualified individual to join our team and help the farming community in Northern Vermont adapt precision agriculture technology and practices on their operations. The FWA Precision Agriculture Specialist will be responsible for helping farmers manage data from precision agriculture systems.
This is a full time (40 hours per week), non-exempt, grant-funded position. Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required for board meetings and events. This position will be a hybrid position with some remote work and some on-farm.
Hourly rate will be based on experience. Anticipated range: $25 - $30/hr.
This position will work closely with the FWA board and Program Coordinator, UVM Extension, and the local farming community to facilitate the adaptation of precision agriculture concepts and practices in Vermont. A background in farming and precision agriculture is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Prior Experience in an ag related field preferred
Previous hands-on experience or solid understanding of the equipment used in Precision Ag
Experience with GIS software or other platforms associated with managing data used in agricultural planning
Minimum 3 years experience working with Precision Ag or comparable field and/or advanced training in Precision Ag or a relatable field.
Must be able to work in a board setting, assist farmers and collaborate with team members to assist with the planning, implementation and follow up of projects
Agronomy skills preferred
Anticipated Functions:
Improve utilization of precision agriculture technologies and data management on farms located in Franklin + Grand Isle Counties and beyond
Improve practical application of record keeping and nutrient management plans and increase capacity of farmers to use these tools on their own farms
Transfer data from precision ag technologies to nutrient management planning software and identify barriers related to that transfer process
Provide technical service and recommendations in regards to precision ag technology to producers
Assist producers in installing and calibrating their precision equipment
Utilize a variety of software programs to collect, store, process, and interpret precision ag data
Utilize GIS software to interpret satellite remote sensing to identify and map field variability and prepare variable rate fertility and seeding maps for producers
Prepare variable rate and flat rate fertility and seeding recommendations
Implement variable rate application of lime and nutrients
Assist in marketing precision agriculture program to producers
Network with local government and extension leaders concerning precision ag practices
Physical Demands and Work Conditions: This is a hybrid position with expectations of being regularly available for in-person meetings and events in and around Franklin and Grand Isle Counties, Vermont. Mileage will be reimbursed at the Federal Mileage Reimbursement Rate. This position will require physical activity associated with activities. Hands-on, in-field work with farmers required. May involve exposure to inclement weather and irregular hours.
